DESCRIPTION:A unique opportunity to learn all about flax – a plant that is used for food\, fibre and industry – in this free talk. \n— Booking available only on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/natural-fibres-ancient-modern-a-talk-with-simon-cooper-flaxland-uk-tickets-858103168677?aff=ebdsoporgprofile  — \nFlax is one of our oldest crops – the fibre from its stem can be spun into the finest of linens for lace\, or woven for clothing\, sails and to the strongest of natural ropes. \nThe ancients recognised the therapeutic value of flax seed\, oil from its seed\, rich in omega 3\, have many nutritional and industrial uses. \nAs clothing\, in industry and for food\, flax is playing an increasing role in the present day quest for natural sustainable living. \nFlowering blue fields of flax not only look most beautiful\, they live up to a translation of their Latin name\, ‘line most useful’\, Linum Usitatissimum. \nThis talk by Simon from Flaxland UK will cover: \nHow we became flax growers\nThe maritime and fishing heritage\nHistory of flax growing and production\nChallenges and rewards of returning to natural fibres\nPresent state of flax growing in UK and worldwide\nNutritional\, industrial and new uses of flax based products.\nThere will be time for questions too! \nFrome Town Hall\, Christchurch St West \nFrome\, BA11 1EB \nThe talk is upstairs in the council chamber \nFull disabled access\, lift and toilet \nParking: There is some disabled parking at the rear of the Town Hall.
